Raw steel will eventually rust if left outside in the elements. Wiping your firepit down with an oil such as grapeseed oil will help to prevent or delay rust.
High-temperature paint is an option, but please note the paint on the inside will burn off with the first couple fires, and the outside may need to be touched up once in a while.
